Skeletal Anchorage SurgeryDVD Education

On March 2, 2009, Progressive Dentistry presented a third day to “Skeletal Anchorage” titled “Skeletal Anchorage Surgery.”  This seminar was taught by Dr. Grant McGann, OMFS, the son of Dr. Don McGann.  The topics of this seminar are listed below.  Since this seminar was offered on such a limited basis, we decided to film the session to allow those who did not have access to the seminar to lean the skills necessary to effectively place Ortho Anchors.

In “Skeletal Anchorage,” Dr. Don McGann covered the expanded possibilities in ortho through using skeletal anchorage.  On an optional 3rd day, Dr. McGann’s son, Dr. Grant McGann, a maxillofacial surgeon in San Diego, explained how to place Skeletal Anchorage and apply what you have learned in “Skeletal Anchorage” to your practice.

Some of the covered include:

  • Full thickness flaps, incisions to closure
  • Instruments needed to lay flaps and hold the retraction
  • Types of local anesthetic to use, blocks and infiltation locations for local anesthetic, blood supply
  • Structures to avoid (but not to be afraid of)
  • Post-operative instructions
  • Complications and their management
  • Mucogingival flaps and incisions, closure
  • Anatomy in the common skeletal anchorage locations of piriform rim, infra-zygoma, palate, buccal to lower teeth second molar to anterior
  • What you need to communicate to the surgeon IF you plan to refer the surgery
