Advanced Orthodontics

The Advanced Ortho Series involves personal study of principles to correct the most difficult cases, and will increase your understanding of ALL ortho cases. Whether or not you now treat advanced cases, this training will improve your understanding and everyday ortho and dental skills. This series is recommended for all Progressive Orthodontics graduates, especially if you are treating more than 30 cases.

Not every doctor feels the need to go this far in their training. But if you are one that wants to treat the exceptionally difficult cases, the cases that should have orthognathic surgery, but say ‘no’, then this is training is a must for you. If a large portion of your practice is Asian patients or patients with very deep bites, severe class II or III, or severe open bite, then this section will give you the skills needed to have a successful practice without frustration!

The format will be 8 instructional cases per session (2 per day) with extra cases presented as time permits. It is YOU that needs to learn to do the work on these cases, making the tough decisions and treatment plan for the unusual circumstances.

In 2012, students will have a great opportunity. For 1-time only, Dr. Don Mcgann will teach the Advanced Ortho Series. You can feel confident you are receiving the highest level of training from the founder of POS himself.

This series uses the highest level of educational techniques, such as:

  • Website preparation of cases
  • CDs with lecture material to see each case on your own laptop
  • Homework assignments in IPSoft™ and Dental cad
  • Email diagnosis

Session I - Corticotomies, RBT & Skeletal Anchorage

This session deals with the fundamentals of segmental corticotomy applied to the upper arch. Prefecting the orthodontic mechanics to go along with this minor, in-office procedure, was one of McGann’s greatest developments in his career. The limits of tooth movement were extended, essentially eliminating the need for orthognathic surgery except to change facial abnormality in the most severe cases.

The diagnosis of the need for corticotomy was changed by McGann in 2010, using the diagnosis tool of his ‘range of bracket torque templates’ and the application of low force over a long period of time using skeletal anchorage and incisor torque control. This reduced the need for corticotomy in the maxilla, extending the range of tooth movement to many more patients.

Session II - Class II and Class III Cases

We will see just how far we can go with our new range of skills in the upper arch. Class III cases with maxillary insufficiency, major class II cases with maxillary protrusion, and adult cases with severe transverse problems will all be treated without the tool of orthognathic surgery. But of course we will also be showing cases treated with surgery, comparing our ability to predict the outcomes and appropriateness of the service.

This course will also be incorporating skeletal anchorage to the maxilla, assisting in maximum anchorage treatment plans and controlling the vertical in the anterior and posterior segments.

Bimaxillary protrusion can be some of the most challenging cases in orthodontics, as the maximum retraction of upper incisor teeth encounters palatal and lower lingual cortical bone resistance, deep bite, myofunctional issues and torque control problems. If you practice in Asia, or have a large Asian patient population, this session is what you have been waiting for!

Session III - Severe Class III Without Surgery

The foundation for corticotomy surgery in the mandible will be established, including segments being made to assist tooth movement in all parts of the dental-alveolar complex.

Severe class III cases without orthognathic surgery? Are you crazy? Yes, we have been providing these services for years. Lower labial corticotomy is the winner with the number of these needing corticotomy surgery (local anesthetic) reducing as McGann discovered the methods of low force to remodel even the lingual mandibular symphysis. Be an expert and offer services to many patients that could not have treatment because orthognathic surgery was beyond their means.

Major retraction, advancement and expansion of the lower teeth and alveolar bone will be investigated as cases with skeletal asymmetry, vertical extremes, and transverse problems will be found in this course.

Session IV - Multidisciplinary Cases

Now that you have the full range of skills developed by McGann in his 35 year orthodontic career, let’s work with some of the most complicated cases on this planet and see how far we can diagnose and treat. Multidisciplinary cases with TMD problems, periodontal problems, and an assortment of missing teeth and complications will be found to make the orthodontic tooth movement sometimes secondary to the many other complicating factors.

We have come a long way since Session 1, this is time to celebrate your new knowledge that no one can take away from you.
